The work of Stane Jagodič is one of three historical points in the exhibition, alongside the work of Yoko Ono and Mako Sajko, establishing a link between the present and the foundations of environmental thought in visual art. Jagodič has been working consistently since the early 1970s, responding to current events, politics, rampant consumerism, and environmental catastrophes (such as Chernobyl) with his biting sense of humour, direct messaging, and prophetic insight.
Here he presents three series of photomontages, photo collages, and photo-drawings called Automobilisms, Ecology – Paradox, and Replacement: Automobilisms, alongside an assemblage piece called Eco Design. The earliest collage dates back to 1971, while the latest as recently as 2016, sometimes within the same series, demonstrating a clear line of thought throughout his long career.
Eco Design (1986) is a once white, now dirty shirt, perhaps even dripping in blood, bearing the names of places near and far effected by man-made pollution, like Kidričevo or Hiroshima. The damage done is further demonstrated with the application of medical plasters, marking each of the names.
Stane Jagodič (b. 1943) is a graphic artist and author whose prodigious and relentless output offers a sardonic cartography of post-war and post-socialist Central Europe. His collages, caricatures, and drawings have addressed most of the major geopolitical issues of the past half century, appearing in newspapers and museums, and on billboards and t-shirts, amongst other venues. In 1995, Jagodič founded the Aritas-satirA Triennial of Satire and Humour in Šmarje pri Jelšah.
